The research project to train the Saint Joseph's Catholic Hospital laboratory in clinical trials was presented in Ghana during an international workshop.

Peter L. Dawo, director of St. Joseph's Hospital in Monrovia, and Alfredo Mayor, associate research professor at IsGlobal, presented the project Strengthening the laboratory capabilities of Saint Joseph's Catholic Hospital in Monrovia for clinical trials in infectious diseases, at the international workshop on the Ebola virus held in Ghana on February 10 and 11 (EDCTP-TDR-CIHR Ebola Virus Disease workshop).

This project will be carried out by the consortium IsGlobal (Barcelona Institute for Global Health), Saint Joseph's Catholic Hospital in Monrovia and Juan Ciudad NGO for a year and a half, and has European funding through the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP).

The objective of this research project is to build and strengthen the capabilities of the Monrovia Hospital laboratory in conducting clinical trials, between and during future outbreaks of infectious diseases.

Therefore, hospital staff will be involved in the project, in addition to improving the laboratory equipment, so that it can develop clinical trials that will advance research on infectious diseases.

This initiative will take place in the new post-Ebola situation that the Hospital is experiencing, after being reopened in November 2014 and having served nearly 12,000 women and children in the maternal and child health area.

From Juan Ciudad NGO, Ana Meyer, Project Coordinator, will be the person in charge of participating in the team that forms the consortium.

The Ebola virus workshop was held at the Noguchi Memorial Institute of Medical Research at the University of Ghana, and was chaired by Dr. Thomas Nyirenda of EDCTP and Dr. Marc Ouellette of CIHR (Canada's Institute for Health Research).
