World Week for the Day of the Fight against Poverty

Although we should work every day to end poverty and inequality in the world, October 17 was chosen to expressly commemorate this.

According to the United Nations Development Programme, half of all people living in poverty are under the age of 18, according to the latest estimates from the 2018 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), released on September 20 of this year.

These data show that in 104 predominantly low- and middle-income countries, 662 million children are considered multidimensionally poor. In 35 of these countries, half of all children are poor.

The 2018 Multidimensional Poverty Index looks beyond monetary income and shows how poverty is the experience of facing multiple and simultaneous deprivations. The MPI analyzes how people are falling behind in health, education, and living standards, with deprivations such as lack of access to safe drinking water, sanitation, adequate nutrition, or primary education. Those deprived of at least one-third of the MPI components are classified as multidimensionally poor. The 2018 figures, which are now closely aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, cover almost three-quarters of the global population.

October 17, World Day for the Fight against Poverty:

The Spanish Alliance Against Poverty and Zero Poverty call on all citizens to attend the Protests will take place around October 17 around the world, including many Spanish cities. We also invite you to participate in the various activities organized around the week to combat poverty. We call on all citizens to mobilize and jointly demand an end to the wealth that impoverishes both inside and outside Spain.

The proposed action campaign will encourage and promote various activities initiated by our social justice groups to increase public pressure to end the obscenity of inequality.

We want to denounce poverty, inequality, and unsustainability, and put people and their rights at the center as a matter of social justice and human dignity. On this 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it is especially important to remember that poverty is fundamentally a violation of these rights in different dimensions: housing, income, family life, migration, healthcare, etc.
