Volunteering at the Nuestra Sra. del Pilar Clinic in Argentina

We share with you the testimony of Nubia RendĂłn, our volunteer at the Nuestra Sra. del Pilar Clinic in Argentina. Nubia is a nursing assistant at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Sant Boi de Llobregat (Barcelona). Below, she tells us about her September volunteer experience at this center run by the Order of St. John of God in Argentina.

I arrived in the town of Lujån in Buenos Aires (Argentina) on September 1, 2018 as a volunteer at the Nuestra Señora del Pilar Clinic (a center of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God dedicated to mental health care).

Alone, not knowing anyone and not knowing what the people I would meet upon my arrival were like, I let myself be carried away by each moment that arose. The first few days, I felt the absence of the people there, so I felt the need to reflect on this situation, putting myself in their shoes and focusing my gaze inward. I realized that I had to show the people with whom I would share a month of my stay at the center who and what I am, but above all, my interest and desire to contribute in any way I could.

From that moment on, the situation took a very positive turn. Every person I met was a door that opened for me, with great satisfaction, feeling reciprocated by my approach to each and every one of those who make up the center's staff.

This is how I was able to conclude my experience, integrated and part of an admirable team where unity, respect, charisma, and love for the work they do reign.

Finally, I can say that I am proud to be a volunteer, although on the other hand, I believe that volunteers don't seek to inflate their pride or enrich their ego with the work they do; they simply seek to achieve the fullest measure of humility. All these experiences inspire me to continue volunteering wherever the occasion requires.
