Today we want to remember him by sharing with you the experience of two volunteers from Juan Ciudad NGO who are currently in Cameroon, working at the Saint John of God Health and Orthopedic Center in Douala, Yassa.
Ombretta D'Aura, a social worker, and Ayoze Gil, a family and community doctor, arrived in Yassa in mid-March and will remain there until mid-June. This is their testimony:
"After the first three weeks of contact, observation, and individual conversations, this Saturday we held the first official meeting with the Yassa Health Center team to advance our work on health education.
The nurses, one of the laboratory technicians, and the accountant attended. We began with a discussion about why we need to provide health education and the role of each of us as healthcare professionals in this area.
The entire team agrees on the need to work on this issue because they believe that educating patients means empowering them and making them responsible for their own health. Furthermore, in a context like Cameroon, where healthcare is not free and patients have limited financial means, prevention is not only better than cure but also more cost-effective.

At the meeting, we analyzed the needs and challenges associated with implementing educational initiatives at the center. The team decided to create a committee to coordinate and promote the educational program, and some topics for discussion have been selected. And now... let's get on with the work!
From Juan Ciudad NGO, we thank you for your commitment and congratulate all the professionals and volunteers working in the health field, often with limited resources and a great deal of enthusiasm and creativity.
