Today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty: October 17

On the occasion of the International Day for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, the individuals, movements, and organizations that promote Zero Poverty call on society to mobilize to achieve concrete and effective measures against poverty and inequality.

Poverty, and especially inequality, are becoming more extreme, intense, and chronic. It is urgent to address the causes and change the economic and social policies that generate wealth for TP3T11 and widespread impoverishment for the rest of the population, both within and outside the Spanish state.

We also need to change a system that fosters war for the geostrategic control of resources, destroys nature, causes famine, and increases social inequalities. We know what the problems are and we understand many of their structural causes; we also know that there are real and feasible solutions. We want rights-based solutions. We demand policies that have social and environmental justice at their core. Specifically,

Commitments to leave no one behind:

  • Increased budget for public social inclusion and protection policies (including investments in education and effective child protection measures; investments in healthcare and the repeal of Royal Decree 16/2012 to restore universal healthcare; gender equality policies and plans to combat gender-based violence; unemployment protection measures and social and labor integration; a Minimum Income to comply with the Minimum Income Benefit Law; and compliance with the Dependency Law and the payment of the benefits established therein).
  • Increased funding for global solidarity. Development cooperation and humanitarian aid untethered from commercial, security, and border control interests. Measures to ensure redistribution.
  • Tax Justice through fair, progressive, and adequate tax policies that support social policies (passing a law against fraud and tax havens, and a Financial Transaction Tax).
