Juan Ciudad NGO supports solidarity campaigns for pediatric surgeries for 35 children and their families living in poverty.
As we do every year, during the Christmas holidays, Juan Ciudad NGO wants to highlight one of our projects. This time, it's an initiative that funds surgeries for sick children living in extreme poverty in Maracaibo, Venezuela. To this end, we are seeking contributions to raise âŹ36,360. The entire amount will be used to cover the cost of these essential surgeries for these children, who live with their families in a very difficult environment.
In this border city with Colombia, the San Rafael Home Clinic has been facing an extremely difficult situation for years, like the rest of the country, due to the socioeconomic situation. The center has 18 inpatient beds and six operating rooms, two of which are operational and two are operating without biomedical equipment.
The center operates in a context of hyperinflation, which causes the price of supplies and basic necessities to increase in a matter of hours. Medications and services are affected by this economic instability, which also impacts the population's ability to pay as a result of low incomes and the reduced ability to cover sponsored cases by donors. In this situation, generating income for the San Rafael Home Clinic is a daily challenge.
Furthermore, basic services present serious deficiencies: waste collection is not provided by the corresponding public institutions and must be paid for by the Clinic at a weekly rate exceeding $400. The energy supply is another unstable factor. The shortage and the need to keep the center operational means it must purchase fuel from third parties at a monthly cost of $1,500, with no guarantee of availability. This fuel is essential for providing services such as transporting staff on a clinic bus, but due to the shortage and operational problems, the center has subcontracted this service at a monthly cost of $1,500. Drinking water is also scarce, and in many cases, it does not meet the necessary sanitary standards.
In terms of healthcare, the center had 90 active employees and 156 medical professionals in September of this year. Surgical procedures to date have dropped to 43, compared to 54 the previous year. In this context, the 2021 Christmas Campaign seeks to facilitate the intervention of 35 children from families living in poverty in the Venezuelan city.
