Promoting food security among vulnerable children under 5 years of age in the Port Loko District

The food security promotion project for mothers and children under five in the Port Loko district of Sierra Leone is part of the community health program that Mabesseneh Hospital has been running for years to improve the health and well-being of the most vulnerable populations. The initiative targets families facing particular social and health risks, especially those with malnutrition, recurring illnesses, or difficulty accessing adequate food. To this end, basic and nutritious food products are purchased and distributed to improve the diets of pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and young children.

In addition to addressing immediate food needs, the project aims to strengthen malnutrition prevention and reduce health complications associated with food insecurity, complementing the monitoring and care provided by community health teams at Mabesseneh Hospital. This intervention seeks to improve the nutritional status of the beneficiary population, strengthen the resilience of the most vulnerable families, and contribute to healthy child development, thereby promoting a better quality of life and reducing the risks of illness and infant mortality in the communities of the Port Loko district.
