The Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God has launched the solidarity campaign "Give Hospitality a Space in East Timor." The goal of this campaign is to raise funds to build a decent building in the city of Dili to serve as a temporary shelter for people who need help finding their way to independence and returning to a normal life. The campaign hopes to raise âŹ280,138 for the construction of the new center.
East Timor is a small island developing state with a population of 1.3 million, classified as a least developed country. Its multidimensional poverty rate is 45.81%, the highest in Southeast Asia, with women, people with disabilities, and communities in remote rural areas most at risk of experiencing this type of poverty. Children also make up almost half of the population and are the first victims of the country's high poverty rate.
The Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God, specifically the Brothers of the Province of Portugal, are providing significant support to the Brothers in Timor, providing them with infrastructure for the most vulnerable sectors of society. The Order's assistance projects in Timor are few but very necessary, and they are capable of being self-managed and sustainable in the medium term.
