Iquitos: The positive impact of promoting healthy habits in the Peruvian Amazon

In Peru, and since 2016, Juan Ciudad ONGD has collaborated with the San Juan de Dios Clinic in Iquitos and the Public Health Institutions of the Department of Loreto, in a socio-sanitary project in four human settlements: "Mamma Irene", "8 de Agosto", "8 de Abril" and "25 de Enero", which you can learn about in full in our latest issue of our magazine. â€œAmong All”These are groups of families established without legal title and lacking basic services such as water, sewage, and electricity in this municipality, the largest in the Peruvian Amazon.

In this context, the project's goal was to promote healthy lifestyle habits to combat malnutrition in children under 5 years of age, as well as prevent diarrheal and respiratory diseases. The knowledge gained during the project has also enabled 9 out of 10 families to now know how to manage acute diarrheal diseases and acute respiratory infections. Furthermore, Juan Ciudad NGO professionals have provided guidelines for preventing vector-borne diseases such as dengue fever.

This project, which advocates for the right to health in the four settlements of Iquitos, has had a significant impact on the community, improving coverage of growth and development checkups, providing complete vaccinations appropriate for their age, and reducing anemia and acute and chronic malnutrition in children under 5 years of age.
