Juan Ciudad ONGD, the international cooperation organization of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God in Spain, will hold an informational event open to the general public and the media to explain the current situation in Kerala, where the emergency continues and a long reconstruction period is expected following the devastating floods of last August.
In India, monsoon rains have been particularly strong and sustained this year, with several states experiencing severe flooding and landslides, exacerbated by the opening of numerous dams that reached their maximum capacity and were at risk of bursting.
It is currently estimated that nearly 1,000 people have died as a result of this situation across India, and one million have been forced to leave their homes, finding shelter in relief centers run by the government, NGOs, and other institutions.

In Kerala, the worst-hit state, the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God is providing aid to the victims from its hospital in Kattappana, as well as the Diocese of Kanjirappally and the Congregation of the Poor Clares, in conjunction with the Changanassherry Social Service Society (CHASS), through parishes, schools, and other social centers.
For this reason, Juan Ciudad NGO has launched the "Emergency in Kerala" campaign to raise awareness about the humanitarian work these institutions are doing in the area, as well as to raise funds to support their work.
At this time, there is a risk of epidemics, and it is necessary to rebuild homes, roads, bridges, and fields, among many other needs, such as providing students with clothing and the lost slag heaps so they can resume classes as soon as possible.
The event on September 20th will feature presentations on the work carried out so far in Kerala, as well as future reconstruction projects. The event will feature presentations by Brother JosĂ© MarĂa Viadero, director of Juan Ciudad NGO, and Sisters Annamma Philip (Superior in Madrid) and Jo MarĂa George, representing the Poor Clares, who will present a video with images of the situation on the ground.
