The degradation of a conflict with no end in sight
A sociopolitical crisis has been raging in Cameroon's English-speaking regions since 2016. In 2017, this crisis escalated into an armed conflict, which has continued to this day. Our St. John of God Hospital in Batibo has continued operating amid this deadly conflict, which, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), was the most neglected crisis on the planet in 2019.
The Batibo Health District has a population of 92,992 people and covers a total area of 750,000 square meters. It is one of the 19 health districts in the Northwest Region of Cameroon, with 30 of the 35 functional health units. The Saint John of God Health Center has a catchment area of 8,389 inhabitants.
In the article published in our magazine âAmong AllâBrother Linus Tangu, Provincial Councilor and Director of Batibo Hospital, tells us about the current situation in the area and our hospital. We also hear the heartbreaking testimony of Nsoh Claudette Fuen, head of accounting at St. John of God Hospital in Batibo: "I remember having to run from work to the school where my 4-year-old son was studying, and a shooting started in that area. It was a nightmare. Another time, I had to carry my daughter and ran into the bushes because armed men had entered the hospitals."
