In less than 15 days, two hurricanes (ETA and IOTA) have devastated Honduras.
After more than 24 hours of rain, two of the largest rivers that flow through the Sula Valley, which is made up of 18 municipalities, including San Pedro Sula, where our San Juan de Dios Hospital is located, overflowed their banks.
The floodwaters caused flooding up to 4 meters high, the total loss of homes and corn, sugarcane, bean, and African palm crops, and the impact on manufacturing companies, which are the largest source of employment in the northwestern part of the country.
According to official reports, an average of two million people are estimated to be affected, and the 80% is in the Sula Valley area.
Our hospital has lost its COVID-19 triage area, and medical equipment and office supplies have been damaged.
SAN JUAN DE DIOS STATION:
The San Juan de Dios Hospital has installed the San Juan de Dios station in the Sula Valley to provide food and drink to the 2,500 people being rescued and to the exodus of people seeking refuge with their families or in shelters.
The devastation left by Hurricane Eta in our region is massive, with half of San Pedro Sula flooded. The impacts are not only economic but also social, as unemployment and poverty will increase in the aftermath of this disaster.
Brother Gudiel SĂĄnchez ChacĂłn shares this quote from one of the users of the San Juan de Dios aid station: âSaint John of God has saved me twice. The first time was due to my illness, because they truly cared for me as a person. And the second time is now that he's feeding me because I've lost everything. Thank you for helping us and being with us.â
