Four international volunteers from JCONGD participate in the 2019 meeting of the Basque Youth Cooperators.

Once again this year, the Basque Government has organised a meeting to assess the field experiences of young people who have participated in the Basque Youth Cooperator Program 2019, including some from Juan Ciudad ONGD (JCONGD).

This initiative promotes the participation of young people from the Basque Country in cooperation initiatives in southern countries, fostering a culture of solidarity among peoples and cultures through their direct participation in development cooperation initiatives in countries in the Americas, Asia, and Africa.

The meeting was held on October 27 at the Barria shelter in Vitoria, and was attended by Eugenio Alonso, JCONGD delegate in the Basque Country, along with three young volunteers: Naia Ros, Uxue Franke, and Leire Eiguren, accompanied by Eba Ruiz de Azua, from the Pastoral Service of the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Arrasate-MondragĂłn.

From its Basque Country office, Juan Ciudad NGO is participating in this program for the second consecutive year. This year, 2019, four people collaborated with the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God in Peru and India through our international volunteer work. Naia Ros and Leire Eiguren were at the San Juan de Dios Rest Center in Piura, Peru, dedicated to mental health; and Uxue Franke and Karla Aguirre were at the San Juan de Dios Special Education School in Velloor, Kerala, India.

Eugenio explained that "for three months, from July to September of this year, the volunteers put their professional knowledge and personal skills to the test, adapting them to other cultures in an experience that, in addition to awakening sensibilities, helps us develop self-knowledge."

Uxue, who volunteered at the SJD Special Education School in Velloor, Kerala, said, “International volunteering gives you the opportunity to understand something that seems so simple, but which at first, is so difficult for us,” as they left without the notes, which they initially missed, but they brought back backpacks full of humanity.
