According to the United Nations (UN), there are currently nearly 1 billion people living in extreme poverty, and more than 800 million suffer from hunger and malnutrition.
On the occasion of Anti-Poverty Week, which begins on October 17, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon emphasized that: âPoverty is both a cause and a consequence of marginalization and social exclusion. To fulfill the promise of the 2030 Agenda to ensure that no one is left behind, we must address the humiliation and exclusion of people living in poverty.â

Juan Ciudad ONGD, as a member of the Coordinating Committee of NGOs for Development in Spain (CONGDE), supports the actions planned for this week and also expresses its concern regarding a reality denounced by numerous civil society organizations, which state:
We have seen in recent decades a massive transfer of power from the public sector to private interests, a push for economic and financial liberalization, growing inequality, poverty and environmental destruction product of policies focused on the interests of a minority that monopolizes wealth and power.
TTIP, CETA, TPP and TiSA These are attempts to deepen and make irreversible these processes of dispossession. Our struggle to prevent these secret agreements is therefore united with that of social movements against austerity, the fight for climate change, and social justice. The solutions proposed must be based on human rights.
