11 tons of humanitarian aid sent to the SJD Clinic in Iquitos, Peru

A new 11-ton container of humanitarian aid left the Juan Ciudad NGO warehouse in Madrid a week ago, bound for the San Juan de Dios Clinic in Iquitos, located in the Peruvian jungle, where low-income people receive rehabilitation and disability care.

The container contains hospital supplies (gauze, bandages, sheets, needles, diapers, mosquito nets, etc.), hospital linen (sheets, towels, blankets), equipment (wheelchairs, stretchers, treatment carts, operating room lights, etc.), non-perishable food, and hygiene and cleaning products, among others.

The San Juan de Dios Clinic of Iquitos is located in the department of Loreto, northeastern region of the country, in the Peruvian Amazon, surrounded by  Amazon, Nanay and Itaya, being a place of difficult access, which can only be reached by air or river.

The Hospitaller Order's presence in Iquitos dates back to 1968, when the SJD Clinic in Lima, along with other institutions, joined together to form a Ladies' Committee, concerned with serving the region's disabled children.

Over the years, the large influx of children hospitalized in the capital from this Amazonian region led the Hospitaller Order to consider establishing the current SJD Clinic in Iquitos, which opened in 2011. This was made possible thanks to a cooperation project managed by Juan Ciudad NGO that ran from 2009 to 2011.

Currently, this is the only center in the entire Loreto region dedicated to physical rehabilitation and rehabilitation for minors under 18 years of age with disabilities.

The Clinic has a boat with a capacity for 10 people. The multidisciplinary team, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, provides prevention programs and free medical treatment in the hamlets of the Amazonas, Nanay, Itaya, and MomĂłn rivers. These campaigns, known as "Health Messengers," provide care to people living in remote areas and raise awareness and promote health.

We thank all our partners, benefactors, San Juan de Dios Centers in Spain, and other institutions for their solidarity. Their contributions have made this new shipment possible, which will help improve the social and healthcare services at the SJD Clinic in Iquitos, where poverty rates are very high.
